A melting pot
A melting pot – the United States was founded on the principle that we are all equal in the eyes of God and everyone is welcome in the United States of America. Historically, the term ‘melting pot’ was often used to describe the cultural integration of immigrants to the United States. The exact term came into general usage in the United States after it was used as a metaphor describing a fusion of nationalities, cultures, and ethnicities. With the globalization of the tourism industry, we have become much more mobile and have increased our exposure to other cultures, which ultimately has added to our melting pot. This is a metaphor for our society becoming more homogeneous, the different elements “melting together” with a common culture.
The world has an approximate population of 7.8 billion people and it is currently believed that there are over 650 ethnic groups in the world in over 190 countries making up our global population. It is widely accepted that this racial diversity is good for our country, racial diversity has a positive impact on our country’s culture — AND — on the flip side, racial diversity poses many difficulties with our policymakers to solve a multitude of our country’s challenges.
Racial diversity in a melting pot
According to Harvard — There are “five races:”
- African
- Asian
- European
- Native American
- Oceanian
Within this view, variation between the races is large, and thus, each race is a separate category. Additionally, individual races are thought to have a relatively uniform genetic identity.
There are approximately 328,239,523 living in the United States. The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles’ Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
Middle America is comprised of the central states — typically considered to consist of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama. Middle America is a colloquial term for the United States heartland, especially the culturally rural and suburban areas of the United States.
Legal Immigration
While the United States is currently in the midst of ongoing political disagreement between the Liberals and Conservatives about how to move forward with legal immigration — which is the lifeblood of our ‘melting pot’. We are a rich country with many resources and many of our citizens believe that we are not taking care of our legal citizens as well as we could and should. And with the development of Sanctuary Cities sprinkled across the US there has been added stress on our economic system due to the realities of life. We all need health care, food, shelter, clothes, schools, work, and safety.
The question has become — how do we take care of others when we are not doing the same for our own children, veterans, homeless, disabled, and mentally ill? This is obviously a complicated national issue that deserves the utmost attention from our elected officials. Learning to live together in harmony, prosperity, health, and safety is one of many predominant challenges of our time.
The United States of America is a ‘melting pot’ comprised of immigrants from all over the world. This has been woven into the fabric of our nation and is the foundation of our strength as a nation. We, as people, are stronger together, we are better when we collaborate with others, and when we listen, learn, innovate, and work together in an effort to achieve common goals.
