Pro-Choice in America

I am Pro-Life, Pro-Family, AND Pro-Choice in America. One of the greatest gifts in the world is the gift of life. Giving birth to a child is truly a gift and an immense responsibility, one that does not come with instructions. To have the privilege of bearing and rearing a child or even adopting a child is such a blessing to many families. We are each born with our own unique genetic makeup and God-given talents. Some believe that we are born with a purpose, to share our unique gifts with the world. Whether we are born to be a doctor, lawyer, singer, dancer, teacher, or activist — we each have a unique set of aptitudes and gifts that make us special.

When a child is born — we, as a society, have a responsibility to care for that child, they need food, housing, and education — and if their family is not able to provide that for them in a meaningful way — who is going to provide for them?  If you do not want your tax dollars to go to providing for them and you oppose ‘pro-choice’ then you are not ‘pro-life’ —- you are only ‘pro-birth’.

As an adult, I have come to realize that not all people are meant to be parents, not everyone wants to be a parent and not everyone is ready for that immense responsibility and challenge. And, that is OK — it’s better for someone to know that being a parent is not right for them and not do it. Sometimes that might mean they need the option of birth control or possibly an abortion. There are many opinions about this subject — both pro and con — and this is an intensely personal decision.

Pro-Choice in America

I am of the belief that it is none of my business what another chooses to do with their body — and — if the law dictates that we are not able to demand that everyone eats a healthy diet and exercises daily — to prevent disease and rising health care costs, then we are also not able to dictate what a woman does with a pregnancy. There can be many reasons that a woman chooses to terminate a pregnancy and it may be the most humane choice for her at that time in her life — this is not my decision or yours to make — it is only hers.

I do not believe that if you are opposed to abortion, that makes you pro-life. There are diverse arguments and rationales for the anti-abortion stance. The description “pro-life” was adopted by the right-to-life (anti-abortion) movement in the United States following the Supreme Court 1973 decision Roe v. Wade, which held that a woman may terminate her pregnancy prior to the viability of the fetus outside of the womb and may also terminate her pregnancy “subsequent to viability…for the preservation of the life or health of the mother.”

In fact, in many cases — morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but …

  • Not a child fed
  • Not a child educated
  • Not a child housed

I am Pro-Life, Pro-Family, and Pro-Choice — and — it is not my place or yours to make an intensely personal decision for another human being — that is between them and their conscience.
